Ice canoeing started as a necessary means of transportation to cross the frozen Saint Lawrence River during the winter. The legend is that the racing began as a competition between families for the contract to deliver the mail. Now it is the main event at Quebec City's Winter Carnival. 40+ teams compete, struggling with the powerful current, great chunks of ice and frigid water.
Team Calgary has been taking part in the Carnival de Quebec since 1968. The team will be competing when Quebec Carnival restarts it's Ice Canoe race.
Please note that we do not promote the use of Calgary's water bodies and/or rivers for recreational activites. We are trained atheletes with proper safety equipment having adequate knowledge of river rescuing techniques.
